A 15-year-old is currently in custody as authorities search for a second suspect involved in a mass shooting at the Seattle Center that resulted in three deaths and four injuries. This information comes from Mayor Katie Wilson and the police. “We believe this teenager opened fire in the crowd, but details are still under investigation,” Wilson stated. The teen has not been charged with homicide. However, they are held in juvenile detention for suspected firearms violations and first-degree assault. The juvenile’s first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
Seattle Police Department Chief Shon Barnes mentioned that two individuals might have exchanged gunfire near the Seattle Center Armory, affecting several bystanders. Police have encouraged the public to avoid the area while they continue their investigation.
The shooting seems to have originated from a conflict between two small groups who were at odds. A manhunt persists for the second suspected shooter. Police have not ruled out the possibility that one of the deceased could be the second gunman, though this is unconfirmed.
Officials report that a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man died at the scene despite first responders’ efforts. A 56-year-old woman, transported to a hospital in critical condition, also died.
Four additional victims were injured: a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old woman. The toddler’s condition has improved to satisfactory from stable. The other victims had minor injuries or were discharged from the hospital. A 27-year-old man who arrived at a hospital on his own may be an eighth victim, but this has not been confirmed.
Susan Gregg from Harborview Medical Center indicated that injuries included wounds to the arm, abdomen, and legs.
Mayor Wilson referred to the shooting as “an act of horrific violence.” She highlighted the community’s anguish and questioned how an event focused on culture and enjoyment ended in violence. Wilson stressed the importance of keeping risk assessments for shootings absent from community gatherings.
Governor Bob Ferguson, briefed on the situation, stated that State Patrol SWAT teams assisted local police. “My prayers are with the families of the victims and the responders as they work to keep people safe,” he said.
Emergency services and police started arriving at the scene shortly after 6 p.m. The event, the Bite of Seattle food festival, ran over the weekend. Representative Pramila Jayapal expressed her horror over the incident and gratitude towards first responders and medical teams taking care of survivors.
King County Executive Girmay Zahilay echoed Jayapal’s sentiments. He lamented the violence at an event that’s a beloved summer tradition. An attendee, Kayla Carris, described panic with screams and people taking cover during the incident. Todd Behrends, another witness, recounted multiple shots heard and the ensuing chaos as people ran for safety.
