NBA Commissioner Adam Silver informed league owners that Seattle is not a certain choice for NBA expansion, according to a report by ESPN. This announcement surprised many Seattle residents who were hopeful for the return of the Seattle SuperSonics.
Last year, all 30 NBA owners agreed to explore expansion opportunities in Seattle and Las Vegas. Fans were optimistic about the potential return of the Sonics, who left for Oklahoma City in 2008. However, recent statements by Silver suggest this outcome is less certain.
ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst initially encouraged Seattle fans to be excited about expansion. Yet, his latest article has shifted the mood considerably. Silver appears committed to expanding to Las Vegas but mentioned Mexico City as another possible location during a recent board meeting.
This change in direction has left Seattle fans frustrated. Although there were no formal promises, there was an expectation that Seattle was a leading candidate. The choice of Seattle and Las Vegas was strategic, given Seattle’s strong fan base and the Climate Pledge Arena.
One Roof Sports is leading efforts to bring back the Sonics, supported by billionaire Melinda French Gates. Despite this, expansion to Seattle is still uncertain. Silver aims to increase franchise values considerably. Las Vegas bids might surpass $10 billion, while Seattle’s offers may be lower due to existing infrastructure.
Owners want more than ticket and TV revenue. They seek control over arenas, which involves lucrative deals in luxury suites, concessions, and more. Building another venue in Seattle would require a massive investment and may not be feasible.
Silver’s mention of Mexico City introduces another potential market, perhaps as leverage to increase Seattle’s offers. He has not committed to simultaneous expansion in two cities, emphasizing flexibility in decision-making.
This uncertainty is causing frustration among Seattle fans, who have long waited for the Sonics’ return. While Silver seeks the best deal for the NBA’s current owners, Seattle fans remain disgruntled without a clear path forward.
