Seattle’s New Law Protects Nonmonogamous Individuals

Seattle has joined a growing list of cities implementing laws to prevent discrimination against individuals in nonmonogamous relationships. The Seattle City Council has passed a measure that will take effect in June next year, designating polyamorous and nonmonogamous individuals as a protected class.

The unanimous decision by the Council will prohibit discrimination in various areas including employment, housing, business licensing, park usage, policing, and public accommodations. This protection specifically covers adults engaged in consensual relationships with more than one partner.

Seattle’s effort reflects a broader movement to recognize and safeguard the rights of those in nontraditional relationship structures. These measures aim to ensure equal treatment and prevent bias against individuals based on their relationship choices.
