Interior Secretary Doug Burgum addressed recent acts of vandalism on the National Mall, affecting key sites including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Burgum emphasized plans for restoration, increased security measures, and the arrest of those responsible. He sees these acts as an assault on national heritage, promising full legal consequences.
Burgum committed to prosecuting the vandals who damaged the Reflecting Pool, slicing a 350-foot long gash into it, and marking it with anti-Trump graffiti. He stated, “These attacks are akin to an attack on our nation. Our most sacred monuments must be preserved, and perpetrators will face utmost prosecution.” Authorities have detained seven suspects, issued citations, and documented the offenses in 18 police reports.
The damage involved cutting a 350-foot length along the pool’s rubber lining, using a box cutter. Anti-Trump messages were left behind, with “8647” being a notable mark that some view as inciting violence or suggesting presidential removal.
President Trump commented on the incident, calling the vandalism a deliberate act targeting the newly restored site. He described the damage as a significant attack, accusing the vandals of aiming to “destroy our country.” Trump highlighted efforts to refurbish and enhance Washington, D.C., prior to the upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.
Over recent months, the administration has restored over 50 parks, repaired 48 monuments, reactivated 22 fountains, and fixed around 1,700 lights nationwide. A protective fence now surrounds the Reflecting Pool to safeguard it during ongoing investigations and prior to July 4th events featuring fireworks near the monument.
