Sen. Ron Johnson Seeks Accountability and Explores Filibuster Strategy

Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin recently discussed efforts to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci accountable for his management of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with the “Ruthless” podcast, Johnson criticized the response to the pandemic, calling it “a miserably failed response” that restricted freedoms and lacked effectiveness. He expressed frustration that Fauci, a key figure in pandemic management, has not been held accountable.

Johnson, as chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, released a report accusing the Biden administration of misleading the public during the pandemic. His comments come shortly after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, led by Senator Rand Paul, released Fauci’s daily journal entries. These entries detail Fauci’s interactions with both the Trump and Biden administrations, his rise to fame, and his thoughts on the virus’ origins.

Fauci is also set to testify in an upcoming Senate Homeland Security hearing. His pandemic guidance, the origin of the virus, and alleged links of the virus to a Chinese lab have been contentious topics for Republicans. Fauci previously served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as the chief medical advisor to President Biden until his resignation in 2022.

Johnson expressed appreciation for Senator Paul’s efforts in obtaining crucial documents related to Fauci, mentioning the difficulty in acquiring them. Johnson believes more documents need to be uncovered to gain a full understanding.

“I appreciate Chairman Paul calling this hearing, doggedly getting the documents,” Johnson told the podcast.

Additionally, Johnson, who now chairs the Senate Budget Committee, shared his strategy regarding the Senate’s filibuster process. He warned that if Democrats gain congress majority, they might eliminate the filibuster, enabling them to pass policies along party lines. Johnson proposed a strategy to record Democratic votes on the filibuster, ensuring a Senate rule requires 67 votes to end it, foregoing any “nuclear option” to change this requirement.
