Senator Andy Kim from New Jersey has proposed extending Medicaid to cover all children in the United States until they reach 26 years of age. This initiative aims to expand the existing safety-net program, which has been criticized for not adequately serving the nation’s poorest children.
Currently, Medicaid provides health care for low-income families, but it faces challenges in delivering comprehensive services. The proposed expansion seeks to address these shortcomings and ensure broader access to health care for young people across the country.
The suggestion by Senate Democrats highlights a growing concern about the adequacy of current health care provisions for children and young adults. By extending coverage to 26, the proposal mirrors certain features of the Affordable Care Act that allows young adults to remain on their parent’s insurance policies until that age.
