Schwartz will be the first CDC director confirmed by the Senate since Susan Monarez, who was dismissed last August following disputes with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr over vaccine policy. Schwartz moved forward after gaining support from the Senate Health Committee, chaired by Bill Cassidy. Initially hesitant, Cassidy set aside his concerns and endorsed her, joined by every Republican and Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine.
This nomination comes as part of the Trump administration’s third effort to appoint a CDC director. Their initial choice, Dave Weldon, stepped down due to insufficient support amid questions about his readiness and vaccination stance.
Schwartz faces a challenging task, inheriting an agency struggling with low morale and substantial staff reductions. During her confirmation hearing, Cassidy questioned her ability to uphold scientific integrity and resist political interference, specifically regarding Kennedy. His confidence was bolstered by commitments from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to update certain online content.
She faces opposition from figures like Bernie Sanders, who emphasized the necessity for leaders within the Trump administration to stand against anti-scientific perspectives.
