Senate Republicans Seek Assurance on Fund’s End

Senate Republicans remain skeptical about the Trump administration’s assurance that the controversial “anti-weaponization” fund is terminated, despite acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s recent statements. Concerns persist about efforts to revive the fund, which Republicans want officially declared dead. The fund’s termination is crucial for progressing with immigration enforcement funding.

During a closed meeting, Senate Republican leaders informed members that Blanche would clarify the fund’s status, hoping to ease internal tensions. Blanche reiterated in a House hearing that the administration was halting the fund’s progress, despite its initial promise as a recompense for those feeling unfairly targeted by the government. This initiative originated from a Trump family and IRS settlement, raising Republican fears about misuse by individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol incident.

While some Republicans want Trump to officially discard the fund, others call for legislative safeguards to ensure it never resurfaces. Senator Thom Tillis proposed adding this measure to a broader $70 billion budget deal. He argued for a legislative “erasure” of the fund to prevent future allocation or distribution.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune shared Blanche’s remarks with fellow Republicans, hoping to consolidate their support for upcoming budget actions. The plan is to push a significant budget reconciliation package forward by week’s end, requiring unified Republican backing.

A lack of consensus may allow Democratic amendments targeting the fund to gain traction, potentially disrupting package momentum. Senator Susan Collins, among the fund’s critics, anticipates Blanche’s definitive statement to preclude the fund’s advancement, though voting outcomes on related amendments remain uncertain.

As Republican leaders plan to initiate the legislative process shortly, cohesion is essential to counter potential amendments and advance the immigration funding package.
