Senator Marsha Blackburn Criticizes Jack Smith
Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, has voiced strong disapproval of former Special Counsel Jack Smith for allegedly acquiring text messages from 44 Congress members without proper authorization. Blackburn claims Smith broke the law and misused his authority, referencing Smith’s previous denials concerning phone record collections. She calls for a comprehensive investigation into the ‘Arctic Frost’ probe, emphasizing her concerns about personal privacy and legal fairness.
Republicans Question Democrats’ Absence at Senate Hearing
During a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, the Democratic members were notably absent as Republicans examined witnesses on the topic of ‘Exposing Fraud in America.’ The committee’s ranking Democrat, Senator Gary Peters from Michigan, was present only briefly before leaving. The remaining Democrats, including Senators John Fetterman, Maggie Hassan, Richard Blumenthal, Ruben Gallego, Andy Kim, and Elissa Slotkin, did not attend.
The hearing included testimonies from individuals like Nick Shirley and James O’Keefe, who have been involved in investigating fraud. Republicans, led by Chairman Rand Paul, criticized the Democrats for their absence, suggesting it indicates a lack of interest in addressing fraud issues.
Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican from Ohio, remarked on the lack of Democratic presence, noting that the hearing intended to allow parties from both sides to question the witnesses. This absence led to criticism online, with figures like Representative Lauren Boebert branding the Democratic members as ‘cowards.’
Fraud Issues Highlighted During Hearing
Nick Shirley, during his testimony, highlighted the issue of money being stolen from taxpayers through fraudulent activities. He stressed that fraud impacts everyone, especially those who rely heavily on government services. Shirley’s work with David Hoch, exploring day care fraud largely within Somali-owned centers in Minnesota, gained significant recognition, including an invitation to the State of the Union address.
James O’Keefe, also testifying, shared experiences from Los Angeles where his team captured interactions with election petition circulators offering bribes for signatures. He argued that democratic principles are empty slogans unless regularly upheld.
The lack of Democratic attendance drew additional remarks about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz not seeking another term after the state experienced significant fraud issues. Shirley noted the fraud has significantly impacted vulnerable groups, reflecting problems across states like Minnesota and California.
The absence of Democratic members in discussions around taxpayer fraud led to increased scrutiny, as Republicans and conservative commentators criticized the perceived lack of engagement.
