Democratic Senator John Fetterman made an unexpected appearance at the Republican midterm convention on Wednesday. He expressed his commitment to collaborate with President Donald Trump on Pennsylvania’s steel industry. Fetterman introduced Republican Senator Dave McCormick in a prerecorded video, garnering enthusiastic applause from the Pennsylvania delegation. Newsweek’s National Political Correspondent Alex Rouhandeh reported on the event.
During his speech, Fetterman described himself as a ‘common-sense Democrat.’ Despite increasing isolation from his party, Fetterman is drawing approval from Republicans. This has sparked discussions about a potential party switch, though Fetterman insists on his Democratic identity.
“I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life,” Fetterman stated in the video.
He stood in front of Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works steel mill, emphasizing his and McCormick’s plan to collaborate with Trump on supporting the local steel industry. Fetterman expressed pride in his friendship with McCormick despite their political differences.
After taking the stage, McCormick responded warmly. “How great is John Fetterman?” he asked, highlighting Fetterman’s courage and friendship. House Speaker Mike Johnson also applauded Fetterman’s speech, calling him an example of common sense during an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News.
Discussions on Fetterman’s potential party switch remain varied among Pennsylvania Republicans. Some, like Guy Ciarrochi, a Chester County Republican delegate, feel Fetterman need not switch parties. Instead, Ciarrochi supports bipartisan collaboration.
“For the long-term health of the country, I think it’s important that the two parties find a way to work together,” Ciarrochi told Newsweek.
Ciarrochi noted that while Fetterman would be welcomed in the Republican Party, a ‘common-sense coalition’ between traditional Democrats and newer Republicans could be more beneficial.
Pennsylvania delegate Amber Martin praised Fetterman’s appearance as a positive step for the nation. “So, would we like to see Senator Fetterman come to the GOP? Sure,” she said. “But I believe that his foundation is old-school Democrat, and I respect that as well.” Joyce Haas, an alternate delegate from Centre County, shared this sentiment, valuing Fetterman’s contributions regardless of party affiliation.
Fetterman’s relationship with McCormick underscores his willingness to break from party lines on major issues. He has shown readiness to collaborate with Trump since Trump’s return to the White House, having met with him at Mar-a-Lago before the inauguration and later praising Trump’s positions, particularly regarding steel.
