Senator Jon Ossoff’s Controversial Campaign Ad on Georgia Foster Care

Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia faces criticism from the state’s child welfare director. Candice Broce accuses Ossoff of exploiting vulnerable children in the foster care system for political gain. This follows the release of a campaign ad that highlights his efforts to reform the troubled system.

Ossoff’s advertisement, titled “Our Kids,” emphasizes his investigation into the Georgia foster care system alongside Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. The ad discusses scathing reports and bipartisan investigations aimed at addressing mismanagement in the system. Ossoff claims these efforts are part of his dedication to safeguarding children and holding the system accountable.

Broce, however, argues that Ossoff exaggerates his contributions and uses the serious issue of child welfare to boost his campaign. She expressed frustration in a social media post, stating, “For five years, I’ve been in the trenches fighting for vulnerable children and foster care reform alongside thousands of DFCS workers. Trust us when we say Jon Ossoff is nowhere to be found.” Broce highlights Ossoff’s failure to secure more funding or federal support for child advocacy despite criticizing DFCS as under-resourced.

“Ossoff didn’t fix federal law putting group homes out of business,” Broce asserted.

Ossoff’s campaign reacted strongly, labeling Broce an “unqualified partisan political hack” and critiquing her competence. They cite Ossoff’s investigation finding that children in state care were at risk of sex trafficking, backed by reports from the Office of the Child Advocate and others.

Broce refutes allegations against her, arguing children with special needs were mischaracterized in juvenile detention discussions. She believes Ossoff used his findings for political messaging rather than delivering practical solutions.

Broce contrasts Ossoff’s record with that of Senator Raphael Warnock, highlighting Warnock’s tangible support for vulnerable mothers and children. Ossoff’s spokesperson counters, stating it is not Ossoff’s duty to fix the state agency Broce leads.

In the upcoming election, Ossoff seeks a second term against Republican nominee Mike Collins, following Collins’ victory over Derek Dooley. Senator Warnock’s next reelection will occur in 2028.
