Darkening skies led to all flights being halted at Chicago’s two major airports. As operations resumed, delays and cancellations followed. FlightAware data showed 45% delays and 10% cancellations at O’Hare International Airport.
Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage
In Ohio’s capital, power outages were reported, alongside a confirmed fatality. Across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, over 991,000 customers experienced power cuts. Social media images showed flooded roads, damaged roofs, and trees entangled in power lines in the Chicago area.
“Wind started blowing, and you can hear debris hitting all sides of the house at the same time,” said Flossmoor resident Gilbert Casillas.
Tornado Activity and Personal Accounts
The National Weather Service highlighted the region being on the edge of a “ring of fire,” a meteorological phenomenon bringing storms. Two suspected tornadoes were reported in south Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana. Residents described the impact, with individuals like Javid Jenkins taking measures to preserve food due to power loss.
“We’re built for snow. We’re built for cold. We’re not built for this,” Jenkins said.
Incidents and Damage Reports
Reports of wind gusts topping 80 mph emerged. In Tinley Park, Illinois, home damage was significant. Kerry Hourigan spoke about losing her home’s roof and a new barbecue grill. In Portage, Indiana, a fatal home explosion was reported, although its link to the weather remains unclear. Crown Point residents faced extensive tree damage.
“The next thing you know, like, not even 5 seconds later, just wind,” said Hailey Mogan, describing the storm’s force.
Wider Regional Effects
Lake County, Indiana, canceled a fair event, and LaPorte County saw considerable tree damage. In Ohio, a health emergency fatality occurred due to obstructed emergency services. Governor Mike DeWine cautioned about prevailing flood dangers, with ongoing rain warnings in the Ohio Valley. Further storms prompted Columbus officials to close businesses early as Westerville’s library suffered water damage.
