A senior Republican in the Senate has highlighted concerns over a key voting bloc’s allegiance to the party. For years, White, working-class voters have been a crucial part of the GOP’s success. Historically, these voters leaned Democratic, supporting Democratic candidates through much of the late 20th century.
The political landscape shifted significantly with Donald Trump’s rise. His 2016 victory marked a pivotal change, strengthening Republican ties with the working class. Despite this, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, warns that economic concerns might loosen these ties. Moreno, a strong Trump supporter, cautions that the GOP could risk losing its working-class base.
“If we don’t retain these voters, our party is in trouble,” Moreno told Fox News Digital. “Trump filling the void left by the Democrats was crucial. His win in 2016 was a turning point.” Trump has consistently garnered substantial support from White, working-class voters, securing a significant majority in both his presidential campaigns.
Post-2024, some Democrats recognized their struggle to connect with working-class voters. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., advocated for economic populism to win back this demographic. “We need to reclaim our status as the working-class party,” Murphy stated.
Currently, Republicans face political challenges. Economic issues dominate as people express discontent over affordability. A recent Fox News poll highlighted that nearly 60% of voters are concerned about the economy. Additionally, 67% of White voters without a college degree disapproved of Trump’s economic management.
Despite promoting past economic achievements, such as significant legislative bills, Republicans grapple with voter dissatisfaction over issues like high fuel prices. With ongoing conflicts, such as with Iran, Moreno argues that these economic strains are temporary but necessary. “Our stance on Iran is crucial,” he insisted. “Explaining the urgency of our actions and temporary nature of gas price hikes is vital.”
