1987: Guilty Pleas in Prostitution Ring Case
On May 20, 1987, Doris Fischer, along with her two daughters and son-in-law, pleaded guilty to running a prostitution ring from their Buffalo Grove home. This was part of an investigation by the FBI and IRS, titled ‘Operation Safebet.’

1883: Sinking of the Wells Burt
Debris along the North Shore in 1883 indicated a tragedy at sea. The Wells Burt, a three-masted schooner carrying coal from Buffalo to Chicago, was caught in a severe storm on Lake Michigan. The vessel sank, and all 11 crew members, including the captain, were lost. Today, divers often visit the wreck, which lies just 3 miles off Evanston in waters 40 feet deep.
1943: B-24 Bomber Crash
A U.S. Army Air Corps B-24 Liberator, on a training flight from Texas, crashed into a 500-foot gas storage tank near Chicago’s Midway Airport. All 12 aboard perished. The Tribune reported that flames and the explosion’s heat were felt over a mile away.
1970: Atomic Images Captured
University of Chicago physicist Albert Crewe announced the capture of images of atoms in molecules using a scanning transmission electron microscope. This milestone allowed scientists to visualize atomic structures for the first time.
1988: Winnetka School Shooting
Laurie Dann fatally shot an eight-year-old boy, Nicky Corwin, and wounded several children at Hubbard Woods Elementary School. Her shooting spree ended with her death in Winnetka.
