Senior Simon Hayes has taken an unconventional path to become Naperville Central’s starting quarterback. Previously, he was a backup on the freshman B team, did not start on the sophomore B team, and played as a receiver on the junior varsity team with minimal playtime. Despite these challenges, he persevered. “It’s an awesome story,” said Coach Mike Ulreich. “He didn’t know if he was going to play football.” Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 170 pounds, Hayes chose to continue football.
Hayes committed to attending every offseason workout, practicing regularly during summer with receivers Mark Williams, Kyle Clark, and Owen Render. “He’s matured a ton,” Ulreich noted. “He was named a captain by his teammates,” reflecting how much he has grown.
In his second varsity start, Hayes completed 21 of 28 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team to a 42-21 victory over Lockport at Memorial Stadium. This win marked the team’s first home victory since November 2024 when Hayes’ older brother Sebastian led them to the Class 8A state semifinals.
Although Hayes struggled in his varsity debut with a 27-7 loss to Wheaton Warrenville South, things improved against the Porters. Using short, quick passes, he completed 14 of his first 16 attempts, including a 26-yard touchdown to sophomore Ian Figi for a 14-0 lead. “I put a lot of trust in my coaches and my teammates,” Hayes said. “We worked super hard this week.”
In the following possession, Hayes connected with junior Ryan Jacobson for a 23-yard touchdown, making it 21-0. “The coaches said, ‘Simon, just go get a rhythm out there,’” Hayes stated. “Once we get the ball in our receivers’ hands, they can do anything. They’re so fast.”
Mark Williams, expressing admiration for Hayes, said, “Simon is one of the better quarterbacks I’ve seen in high school football. He’s improved so much as a quarterback.” Williams, attracting major Division I interest, caught six passes for 127 yards with the last two for touchdowns.
Additionally, Hayes has support from two skilled running backs: Jacobson and senior Landon Nelson, who made 15 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. “I trust in my boys so much,” Hayes stated. “We’ve put in so much work this offseason.”
Hayes expressed pride in the team’s comeback after a disappointing previous match. “It was a little embarrassing, but I’m so proud of how my boys bounced back,” he said. “It’s such a great feeling.”
Coach Ulreich recognized Hayes’ progress saying, “Part of it is just him growing up. He’s got an unbelievable family that supports him.” Hayes acknowledged the support he received. “First three years didn’t go as planned, but I think the coaches are great mentors. I’m a leader of this team.”
