MEXICO CITY — Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a key figure in the Sinaloa cartel’s history, received a life sentence in a U.S. federal court. Zambada played a pivotal role in establishing the cartel alongside Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. His influence grew after Guzmán’s capture in 2016.
Zambada was escorted out of court by U.S. marshals following the sentencing. This development marks a significant point in efforts to combat drug trafficking. The cartel has been responsible for extensive illegal operations, including drug smuggling and violence.
Zambada’s conviction underscores the ongoing battle against organized crime that extends well beyond Mexico’s borders. His life sentence is without the possibility of parole, ending his decades-long reign within the cartel.
