Sir Anthony Hopkins has unveiled his debut album titled “Life Is a Dream,” showcasing his long-standing passion for music despite the occasional doubt he feels about his musical abilities. Known primarily for his acting, Hopkins expresses a deep connection with music, describing it as his first love and a form of freedom compared to the discipline required in acting.
Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, the album encompasses 12 compositions crafted over six decades. Recorded at London’s Alexandra Palace, it will be released by Decca Records on August 21.
Hopkins’ musical journey began early, picking up the piano at age four and composing his first waltz by the age of 22 in 1960. He has composed scores for several films, including “Shadowlands” (1993), “August” (1996), “Slipstream” (2007), and “Elyse” (2020).
“It’s about my childhood,” Hopkins says of the album, “basically the memories of my childhood and growing up in Wales, my developments in life, my adolescent years.”
The album, containing traces of nostalgia and melancholy, reflects the artist’s life experiences and insights. The first single, “1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra: II. Bracken Road,” captures a summer in South Wales characterized by a sense of yearning and pain. Themes of solitude and happiness are also explored in “Stella Aria,” dedicated to his wife, Stella Hopkins.
Reflecting on his life and career, Hopkins acknowledges his unexpected success and gratitude, saying, “I’m without fear of mortality. I’m just so grateful I’ve lived this long.”
Bradley Cooper unexpectedly played a key role in connecting Hopkins with Dudamel. Cooper witnessed Hopkins’ work with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and recommended him to Dudamel, who was impressed by Hopkins’ storytelling through music.
Looking forward, Hopkins has hopes for live performances, with Carnegie Hall at the top of his list. Memories of his mother encouraging him to play there reinforce his desire to achieve this goal.
