Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, faced social media criticism after sharing his thoughts on 9/11 on his X account. El-Sayed’s message emphasized the attack on the idea of America, describing it as an assault on a nation bound by ideals of freedom and justice.
His statement, which aimed to commemorate the lives lost, sparked controversy due to El-Sayed’s association with Hasan Piker. Piker, a progressive streamer, has previously made inflammatory statements, such as claiming that the U.S. “deserved 9/11.” This connection led to immediate backlash from conservative commentators on social media.
Notable criticisms came from accounts like Libs of TikTok and political figures like Steve Guest. They accused El-Sayed of dishonesty and failing to renounce his ties with Piker. Joanna Rodriguez from the National Republican Senatorial Committee criticized El-Sayed for not disavowing Piker’s remarks about America and called him a disgrace.
El-Sayed has clarified that Piker does not speak for his campaign. He attempts to steer the conversation towards issues like healthcare and education that concern Michigan voters. Chuck Ross pointed out that El-Sayed previously focused on the aftermath of 9/11 in his posts rather than the attack.
Despite distancing himself from Piker’s views, El-Sayed’s campaign has not fully addressed the criticism. Joey Mannarino expressed disbelief at El-Sayed’s progress in his Senate campaign, citing his ties with figures like Piker as major concerns.
El-Sayed has previously criticized military actions as aggression, particularly referencing Israel’s stance against Gaza. He suggested that the president’s support for Israel could be seen as endorsing violence against Palestinians, drawing parallels with 9/11.
El-Sayed’s campaign team did not provide comments on efforts to distance him from Piker’s controversial remarks.
