Socialist Ousts Five-Term Incumbent in New York’s 13th Congressional District

A controversial socialist who previously criticized the United States defeated a long-serving Democratic incumbent in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, 32, is a community organizer and a Columbia University alumna known for her leftist activism. She was involved with Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a group infamous for anti-American posts. Avila Chevalier won against Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y.

Avila Chevalier has taken positions more extreme than prominent progressives, including former Vice President Kamala Harris. She has been challenged for her views on private property, police, and borders. Old posts from 2018 to 2022 revealed her calls to nationalize parts of the private sector.

“Abolishing borders, prisons, and police is possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward,” Avila Chevalier reposted in 2021. She also argued against deportation and border enforcement.

Despite controversial comments, such as calling the U.S. a disgrace and criticizing former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, she secured the Democratic nomination. Her victory comes with support from figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders.

During a debate with Espaillat, who transitioned from an illegal immigrant to a naturalized citizen, Avila Chevalier reiterated her stance against deportation, even for those with criminal records.

Mamdani stood by his endorsement, stating Avila Chevalier’s campaign reflects her evolved views. He praised her for supporting those unjustly detained by ICE and advocating for disenfranchised workers.

New York’s 13th District covers Upper Manhattan and part of the West Bronx. It has never elected a Republican, positioning Avila Chevalier favorably for the general election in November.
