The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been involved in a serious legal matter. Authorities in Virginia have arrested and charged him with shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy. The incident occurred late Sunday in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were summoned to a shooting scene. They discovered 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was promptly transported to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, faces several charges. These include malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He remains in custody without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, was with the team in St. Joseph, Missouri, for practice earlier on Sunday. However, he was not present at the team’s Monday workout. Head coach Andy Reid expressed his sympathies, stating, “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. He’s got a great support group here as a family, as needed. And then we’ll just let time take care of it from there.”
Eric Bieniemy was appointed as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy departed to join John Harbaugh and the New York Giants. Bieniemy held the position of offensive coordinator for the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022. Under his guidance, the team led the NFL with an average of 30.1 points per game, according to CBS Sports Research.
In recent years, Bieniemy has expanded his coaching experience. He served as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears in 2025. In 2024, he was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins. In 2023, he fulfilled similar roles with the Washington Commanders.
