Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham addressed misconceptions that emerged following her recent remarks about teammates Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. With the Fever performing well this season and entering the playoffs, Clark and Mitchell have entered discussions for the WNBA Most Valuable Player Award.
Cunningham commended her teammates as deserving winners on her new podcast launched last week with trainer Drew Hanlan. On this week’s episode, Hanlan noted that a particular clip from last week gained attention online, showing Cunningham applauding Mitchell. He received several comments suggesting people believed Cunningham was downplaying Caitlin’s performance.
“I just think it’s crazy because I have two exceptional players on my team, and I’m going to promote both of them,” Cunningham expressed on the “No Hesitation” podcast. “I can argue that Kelsey deserves the MVP. I can strongly argue for CC too. We support both. You know how the internet spins things. They choose to clip whatever suits them.”
Cunningham described the situation as “actually psychotic” and commented that it provides insight into the nature of WNBA media. She also addressed accusations of not backing her teammates, Clark and Aliyah Boston, during their FIBA World Cup Finals match against France. She clarified that due to a NASCAR promotion, she missed watching the game.
Rising in popularity since joining Clark and the Fever several seasons ago, the 30-year-old WNBA star remains a significant persona due to her outspoken demeanor and views on diverse topics. She expressed a major reason for her podcast with Hanlan is to counteract narratives shaped by media or fans aiming for viral content.
The MVP race continues with Clark and Mitchell mentioned, yet they lag behind the leading contenders. Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson stands as the favorite to claim the award for a fifth time, with Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles as the second favorite.
The Indiana Fever return to regular-season play against the Toronto Tempo on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
