South Korea Calls for Investigation After World Cup Performance

South Korea Seeks Answers Over World Cup Performance

President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea is demanding a thorough investigation into the nation’s disappointing World Cup performance and the subsequent resignation of coach Hong Myung-bo. Despite competing in three matches, South Korea only earned three points, failing to advance from Group A. The team secured a victory against the Czech Republic but was defeated by Mexico and South Africa.

Lee Questions Selection of Coach

Lee expressed his confusion over the team’s performance and questioned the decision to appoint Hong as the coach. Hong, a renowned former defender for South Korea, announced his resignation just a day after the team’s failure to secure one of the eight third-place positions in group play.

“It was not an easy decision for me to take this role, but once I took it, I thought about nothing else except being responsible until the very last moment,” stated the 57-year-old Hong.

The decision to step down came after careful consideration. Hong was spotted at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico during the team’s games.

Call for Government Investigation

President Lee underscored the importance of evaluating the substantial taxpayer funds allocated for the team’s participation in the World Cup. He urged the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the performance, analyze the causes, and develop strategies to prevent similar outcomes.

“Given that significant national taxpayer funds and state support resources are invested even in World Cup participation, I ask that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism thoroughly investigate the precise circumstances of this incident, analyze its causes, and develop thorough measures for preventing recurrence and improvement,” stated Lee.

He emphasized the urgency of reforming sports administration to avert future disappointments, promising swift action.

Hong’s Career Background

Hong Myung-bo is a celebrated figure in South Korea, having played in four World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002). His career includes scoring 10 goals in 136 international matches. Hong previously managed the national team from 2013 to 2014, resigning after South Korea’s elimination (0-2-1) in group play during the 2014 World Cup.
