In an emotional moment, Victor Wembanyama struggled to find words shortly after leading the San Antonio Spurs to victory in the Western Conference finals. This win secured their spot in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. When asked about his connection with former coach Gregg Popovich, Wembanyama paused before answering.
“I don’t know what it means for him,” Wembanyama expressed, acknowledging Popovich’s vast experience. “He’s dealt with things beyond our understanding. I need to call him. I need to see him. I need to talk to him because I can’t grasp how he feels right now.”
Although officially the President of Spurs Basketball, Popovich, a Hall of Famer, is often seen as the team’s guiding force. Despite retiring after a stroke in 2024, he remains active within the team, appearing at practices and offering advice. His presence was palpable when he spoke to the team after their Game 3 loss to Oklahoma City in the previous series.
Known as ‘El Jefe,’ or the boss, Popovich revealed his enduring leadership during an event where he opened his jacket to reveal a shirt embossed with ‘El Jefe.’ Spurs guard Devin Vassell praised Popovich’s extensive experience, noting how invaluable it is. “He helps a lot,” Vassell commented. “His wisdom is immense.”
The NBA Finals against the Knicks will begin Wednesday in San Antonio, with Knicks coach Mike Brown eager to face his former mentor. Brown, who has fond memories of working under Popovich, joked about the financial advantages of the matchup, given his family’s residence in San Antonio.
“Popovich’s influence endures,” Brown stated. “His work both on and off the court is indelible. His presence is perpetually felt, and I hold significant respect for the organization.”
Popovich’s respect remains strong. Recently, he met the Spurs at the airport after their games against Minnesota. Cameras captured him conversing with Wembanyama, who had been ejected for a flagrant foul. Later, Popovich greeted the team after their return from Oklahoma City, where thousands celebrated in the streets.
With five NBA championships already under his belt, Popovich continues to be a critical advisor as the Spurs, now coached by Mitch Johnson, look to secure another title. Johnson highlights his gratitude for having Popovich as a resource during his tenure.
Having guided his team to the finals, Wembanyama is eager for more insights from ‘El Jefe.’ “When I talk to him, it’s going to be only stored in my head,” Wembanyama said. “But I need to talk to him, so quick.”
With four more wins needed for the championship, Wembanyama values Popovich’s experience as vital for achieving victory.
