Spurs Secure Game 3 Win as Knicks Face Surprising Challenges

The New York Knicks faced a setback in the NBA Finals, losing Game 3 to the San Antonio Spurs. This marked the end of the Knicks’ impressive 13-game postseason winning streak. The game, held at Madison Square Garden, saw controversy both on and off the court.

Head coach Mike Brown expressed frustration over the game’s officiating. He pointed out the significant difference in free throw attempts between the Knicks and Spurs. While statistics are clear, fans online speculated about other reasons for the defeat, notably President Trump’s presence at the game.

This marked the first instance of a sitting president attending an NBA Finals game. During the national anthem, when Trump appeared on the jumbotron, the crowd reaction was notable. Sports journalist Albert Samaha reported on this audible disapproval, stating, “When Trump showed up on the jumbotron during the national anthem, [the crowd] booed louder than when the Spurs came on the court.”

In contrast, President Trump shared his perspective with reporters, commenting, “It was, I think, mostly cheers. It was loud, and very enthusiastic.”

NPR’s Michel Martin spoke with Samaha about the game and New York City’s unique reaction to President Trump’s attendance. Predictions for Game 4 and further insights into the series were also discussed in the full interview. To hear the entire conversation, click the blue play button above.
