Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals featured a thrilling contest between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs clinched a victory in double overtime, driven by Victor Wembanyama’s impressive contribution of 41 points and 24 rebounds. Despite this, the Thunder displayed their prowess as reigning champions in the following games, winning Game 2 by nine points and Game 3 by fifteen points. Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued to affirm his status as the back-to-back NBA MVP.
Entering Frost Bank Center on Sunday, the Thunder aimed to secure a 3-1 lead in the series, potentially sealing the Spurs’ fate. However, Wembanyama, often referred to as Wemby, had other plans. He scored 22 points in the first half, capped by a dramatic 42-foot 3-pointer just as the halftime buzzer sounded. This remarkable shot helped the Spurs take a 50-38 lead into halftime. What stood out was Wemby’s consistent shooting form, even on the expansive shot, showcasing his skill.
This marks Wembanyama’s first playoff appearance since being the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Leading the Spurs to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017, he has also earned the season’s Defensive Player of the Year accolade. Uniquely, he secured the award with unanimous support, marking a milestone in NBA history. Despite this achievement, Wembanyama expressed his disappointment at not winning the MVP award, feeling a sense of personal challenge when seeing Gilgeous-Alexander receive the MVP trophy before Game 1.
Wembanyama further established his legacy with his outstanding performance in Game 1. If he manages to lead the Spurs to eliminate the Thunder’s bid for consecutive championships—an achievement last seen with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018—he will solidify his standing. The Western Conference Finals victor is likely to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. The Knicks currently dominate the Eastern Conference Finals, holding a 3-0 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers and carrying a ten-game winning streak in the playoffs.
