A professor from St. Bonaventure University is under fire following a controversial social media post about the death of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham. The post was later deleted but has sparked debates over political discourse in academic environments.
The post, originating from an account linked to Ibrahim Zabad, a political science professor at the university located in western New York, emerged late on a Saturday evening. The message expressed celebration over Graham’s death using aggressive language and closed with the phrase ‘Rest in Hell’, as reported by Campus Reform.
By early the following morning, by 5:09 a.m., the contentious post was removed. An apology was posted on the same account. The apology acknowledged the initial message as inappropriate, disrespectful, and lacking compassion.
‘I want to sincerely apologize for the post regarding the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful and failed to show compassion during a time of loss and grief. I regretted the post and the words I used,’ stated the apology.
Senator Lindsey Graham passed away on Saturday at the age of 71. A preliminary autopsy indicated that an aortic dissection resulting from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease was the cause of death. News of his passing surprised many in Washington as he was an active member of the Senate and was scheduled to appear on ‘Meet the Press’ the following day.
A spokesperson for St. Bonaventure University commented on the situation, stating that they are aware of both the original post and the apology. They emphasized that the post did not align with the university’s mission and values, and they plan to address the matter with Dr. Zabad to ensure adherence to their Franciscan values.
Meanwhile, a statement from Graham’s office mentioned that the death certificate will remain pending until further toxicological and microscopic testing is completed.
