A manhunt is ongoing in New York for a 32-year-old man wanted in connection with the death of his father and an intentionally set house fire in the Hudson Valley. The New York State Police reported that Thomas David Ryan is considered armed and dangerous. The public is warned not to approach him.
Incident Details
State troopers responded to a house fire report on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville at about 7:30 p.m. on August 6. Inside the burned-out home, they found 70-year-old Robert Ryan deceased. Investigations revealed that the fire was set to cover up a crime, leading to the launch of a homicide investigation.
Greenville is located about 65 miles northwest of New York City. Following the incident, police patrols have been increased in Greenville and adjoining areas in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties.
Community Involvement
Investigators are asking local residents and business owners to review surveillance footage from 6 p.m. on August 6 through the night. State police emphasized the importance of community cooperation, stating, “The community’s assistance is critical. Even the smallest detail could help us safely locate Thomas and conclude this investigation.”
Suspect Profile
Thomas David Ryan is described as 6-foot-2 and weighing around 200 pounds. He was last spotted wearing a black T-shirt and black sweatpants. Although he did not reside with his father and had no known current ties to Greenville, Ryan has lived a transient lifestyle using state shelters, with known connections to the Plattsburgh area near the Canadian border.
ABC7 reports that Ryan has seven prior arrests in New York City and is on probation until April 2028. Stephanie Coiro, Ryan’s sister, revealed to ABC News that Thomas has struggled with mental illness. Their father reportedly brought him to the Greenville home after a call for assistance just hours before the tragic event.
“He had his first break at 16,” Coiro explained. “Hospitalization programs are only covered for a limited time, medications are encouraged until age 18, and schizophrenia can tell you you’re fine.”
Transportation and Contact Information
Authorities believe Ryan might drive a gray 2016 Toyota Prius with New York license plate HNH-7671. He is also known to use trains for travel, and so investigators are working with rail transportation partners.
Police advise anyone who sees Ryan to dial 911 immediately or contact the State Police Middletown Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-344-5300.
