Steak ‘n Shake has announced a significant change to its ingredient list. The fast-food chain, known for its burgers and milkshakes, has removed seed oils from its buns. As of Monday, all buns are now made with pure Grade AA Wisconsin butter. This adjustment is part of a series of efforts to improve the quality of ingredients and align with the MAHA movement.
The franchise operates around 400 locations nationwide. In recent months, it switched to grass-fed beef and began frying chicken tenders, onion rings, and tots in 100% beef tallow. These moves aim to offer more natural and wholesome ingredients.
“In my opinion, real ingredients taste better than synthetic additives,” said Michael Boes, the chief MAHA officer at Steak ‘n Shake.
Additionally, the company has launched a dedicated page on their website detailing their transition away from seed oils. This page also highlights their commitment to providing products like cane sugar-sweetened Coca-Cola and a switch to a2 milk, which took place last December.
Public reaction to these changes has been largely positive. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace commented on X, “MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN.” Other users expressed gratitude and anticipation for trying the new burger buns.
Seed oils, commonly found in processed foods, have become a controversial topic. Some health experts, including U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have criticized seed oils. However, organizations like the American Heart Association state that seed oils have nutritional benefits.
Family physician Cate Shanahan, interviewed by Fox News Digital, suggested avoiding particular seed oils like corn, canola, and soy. She refers to them as “the hateful eight seed oils.”
Efforts by Steak ‘n Shake to update its menu reflect broader consumer interests in healthier, more natural food options. The adjustments mark a step forward in aligning with evolving dietary preferences.
