Stefon Diggs, a veteran wide receiver for the Washington Commanders, contributed to a penalty that cost his team 15 yards during a pivotal moment in Sunday’s Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
After successfully catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels, Diggs celebrated by running through the end zone and leaping onto the goal post. This action drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, pushing the Commanders out of an ideal range for a two-point conversion.
Washington’s head coach, Dan Quinn, expressed that the team intended to attempt a two-point conversion if not for the penalty. As a result, the Commanders instead kicked an extra point, reducing the Eagles’ lead to 17-16.
The Philadelphia Eagles secured a victory with a final score of 24-22.
“As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot,'” Diggs confessed to reporters in the locker room after the game. “Back in the day, I’ve been playing for a long time, you used to be able to do that. I’ve got to be better.”
In his debut for the Commanders, Diggs ended with four receptions, totaling 55 yards and one touchdown.
Looking ahead, Washington aims to regain their footing as they face the Dallas Cowboys in a Week 2 matchup on Sunday.
