The Washington Commanders felt the influence of Stefon Diggs during their season-opening matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, which concluded with a close score of 24-22 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Adding to the team’s roster late in the offseason, Diggs registered his first touchdown for the Commanders late in the fourth quarter. This crucial play brought the team within two points with just under ten minutes remaining in the match. However, his celebratory leap onto the goalpost resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The penalty pushed back the subsequent two-point conversion attempt, leading the Commanders to settle for a single extra point instead.
“Touchdown giveth. Penalty taketh,” aptly captures this series of events.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn indicated that the plan was to go for a two-point conversion, had the penalty not complicated the situation. Meanwhile, quarterback Jayden Daniels emphasized the importance of situational awareness. In his statement to Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper, Daniels stated, “You just gotta be smarter. We gotta know situations, situational football. That’s on me for not reiterating that in the huddle. We just gotta be smart. There’s a time and place for everything.”
Diggs, acknowledging the impact of his actions, accepted full responsibility after the game. Despite the setback, Washington had another opportunity to equalize later in the fourth quarter but missed the two-point attempt. Although the penalty was not the sole factor in the loss, it certainly played a significant role in the game’s outcome.
