Diggs successfully deceived Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean, leading to an open score. However, after this brilliant play, Diggs executed a touchdown celebration seen as foolish. He celebrated by jumping onto the goal post, echoing an old Antonio Brown celebration from over a decade ago.
The NFL prohibits using the goal post as a prop, resulting in a penalty for Diggs’s actions. Reflecting on his actions, Diggs commented, “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it I was like this: ‘Oh I forgot.'” He acknowledged the error, noting the need to adapt to current rules.
It’s important to note that Diggs could never legally perform this act without penalty, as the rule banning it was established in 2006. Despite this history, Diggs’s celebration potentially hurt his team’s chances in the game.
The Washington Commanders were trailing 17-9 with 10 minutes left when Diggs scored. His touchdown narrowed the score to 17-15. Coach Dan Quinn intended to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but the 15-yard penalty from Diggs’s celebration forced them to attempt an extra point, adjusting the score to 17-16.
The Commanders eventually lost the game 24-22. This loss interrupted their strategy and highlighted the missed opportunity to even the score after Diggs’s touchdown.
Following these events, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels commented on the need for smarter play. He stressed the importance of situational awareness and managing celebrations appropriately.
Daniels expressed regret for not cautioning teammates against impulsive actions. Coach Quinn spoke with Diggs after the incident, emphasizing the need for better judgment. Although recognizing Diggs’s competitive nature, Quinn pointed out that mistakes need to be avoided during critical game moments.
Diggs’s misstep emphasized the impact of personal actions on team dynamics and led to a teachable moment for all involved.
