Stephen A. Smith, known for his candid commentary, has spoken against the merging of politics and sports. He shared his concerns on a July 17 episode of the ‘Stephen A. Smith Show’ during the Fanatics Fest sports convention in New York City.
Smith highlighted the issue when discussing how the league and media treat WNBA star Caitlin Clark. He emphasized the need to keep divisiveness out of sports.
This is America, baby. This is America — for all the divisiveness, for all the problems, for everything that we endure. Bottom line is this: people from all over the world want to get here, because it’s the land of opportunity. The politicians that sit up there and run their mouth, and try to invade the sports world and contribute to the division — don’t let them do it.
Smith expressed concerns about the comments made by NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who called the debate around Clark ‘political ping pong.’ Smith believes this might further political divides.
Attempting to address the racial and political narratives surrounding Clark, Smith urged fans and players to avoid falling into these traps. He advocated for unity among athletes and leaders.
Smith also appealed to Caitlin Clark and her WNBA peers to overlook their differences. He urged them, along with league commissioners, to focus on unity and resist political exploitation.
Caitlin Clark is not the enemy; she’s your friend. Those other ladies ain’t her enemies, and she has to know that too. And the (WNBA) commissioner has to commit herself to being a leader and bringing everybody together.
Political figures have also weighed in on the matter. For instance, Rep. Tim Burchett criticized Clark’s treatment in the WNBA, calling it “pathetic.” Meanwhile, Rep. Brandon Boyle accused the league of not adequately marketing Clark’s talents, resulting in a debate with commentator Jemele Hill.
President Donald Trump also commented on an incident involving Clark and Alyssa Thomas, supporting Clark after a foul by Thomas led to a suspension. Trump expressed his concern about Clark’s treatment.
Smith continues to address political dynamics within sports and has criticized figures from various political backgrounds. His efforts aim to separate politics from sports to protect the integrity of the game.
