Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, is vying for California’s governorship, attempting to win over Latino support by advocating for affordability and lower taxes. Despite his association with Trump, Hilton aims to appeal to those who dislike Trump without alienating his base. He advertised that even Trump critics might prefer him over Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra. However, some remain skeptical of his intentions.
L.A. Times columnist Gustavo Arellano, with his father, met Hilton at King Taco in East Los Angeles to discuss his proposals. Hilton, dressed informally, has faced criticism for inaccurately labeling Del Taco’s hard-shell tacos as ‘street.’ Determined to connect with Latinos, he has engaged with the community multiple times.
During the meeting, Hilton mentioned the struggles of many Latinos in California, discussing poverty, crime, and high living costs. He criticized Democrats for assuming they have Latino votes without addressing key issues.
Arellano pointed out the contradiction in Hilton’s stance; while calling himself a champion of legal immigrants, the distinction alienates those who arrived without papers. Hilton clarified he didn’t mean people like Arellano’s father who are now legalized, but struggled to understand why illegal immigrants would desire citizenship.
When questioned about Trump’s immigration policies, Hilton denied racism plays a role, though he acknowledged agents sometimes act too harshly. He suggested discussing humane enforcement with border czar Tom Homan.
Hilton’s approach, while focused on reducing living costs, doesn’t prioritize undocumented immigrants. He explained he doesn’t have the power to legalize them as a governor but can advocate for their rights. He remains in a MAGA echo chamber, limiting his appeal.
Despite similar experiences, Arellano’s father disagreed with Hilton on certain issues. Hilton proposed undocumented immigrants return to their home countries with expedited amnesty promises, a plausible legalization method under Republican leadership.
Hilton’s overall vision received praise, though Arellano’s father won’t support him, considering a Democrat vote more aligned with his values. Hilton suggested casting a vote for him in the gubernatorial race while maintaining a Democratic preference elsewhere, yet that failed to sway Arellano’s father’s decision.
