The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, renowned as the world’s largest, is underway in South Dakota’s Black Hills. This marks the 86th edition, drawing hundreds of thousands of riders for a 10-day event filled with excitement.
The town of Sturgis, population 7,100, transforms dramatically during August as approximately 500,000 attendees arrive. Downtown Sturgis becomes packed with motorcycles, while riders spread out across the region.
The rally includes races, concerts, stunt shows, motorcycle demonstrations, vendor exhibitions, and organized rides.
This year, country star Lainey Wilson headlines on August 12. Other performers include YUNGBLUD, Megadeth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rob Zombie, and Insane Clown Posse.
Two notable women’s motorcycle rides, Women Riders World Relay and Shantell’s Sisterhood Ride, wrap up at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame’s Pearl’s Jam event, celebrating women in motorcycling.
Harley-Davidson introduces its new Deadwood motorcycle, inspired by the post-war history of Sturgis. Indian Motorcycle offers the new Indian Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition, with distinctive paint and badging reminiscent of the 1930s.
Attendees often explore the Black Hills, visiting Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Bear Butte State Park, and historical towns such as Deadwood.
Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming is another favored destination for rally-goers.
The rally began in 1938, founded by Pappy Hoel, an Indian dealer. Known for fostering brotherhood among motorcyclists, Hoel’s marketing savvy and dedication to veterans solidified Sturgis’s reputation.
Vinny Terranova remembers Pappy Hoel as a visionary who provided hearty meals and hospitality to all guests. Hoel managed the rally for nearly 50 years until the City of Sturgis took over in the 1980s.
The tradition continues to attract countless visitors, keeping the spirit of Pappy Hoel alive today.
