Sunny Hostin Expresses Concerns Over Symbolism of American Flags

Sunny Hostin, co-host of ‘The View,’ reaffirmed her previous comments on feeling ‘unsafe’ in areas with numerous American flags. On the ‘Behind the Table’ podcast, Hostin discussed her sentiments with the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta.

Hostin explained that this is not a new conversation within the Black community. Reflecting on a visit to North Carolina, she described feeling ‘nervous’ upon seeing a Confederate flag at a friend’s beach house. According to Hostin, the flag’s presence affected her differently than it did her White friends.

On ‘The View,’ she shared that she sometimes feels uncomfortable in neighborhoods that display many American flags. This discomfort stems from a belief that some groups equate the flag with White supremacy. Hostin emphasized that the flag itself shouldn’t symbolize supremacy but acknowledged its misuse by certain factions.

“They call themselves patriots, people that storm the Capitol with Confederate flags and American flags. They have weaponized the American flag.”

Hostin reiterated that she does not oppose the flag itself. Instead, her concern arises when she sees excessive flag displays within communities, suggesting the flag has been co-opted by the far right. She supports efforts to ‘reclaim’ the flag as a symbol of justice, freedom, and equality.

Previously, she defended MSNBC analyst Mara Gay, who also expressed discomfort with American flags paired with political slogans against President Biden. Hostin’s stance highlights ongoing discussions around symbols and their evolving meanings.
