A church in McKinney, Texas, aimed to show its support for Israel with a flag display, commemorating the victims of a 2023 Hamas attack. Senior pastor Len McLaughlin of Heritage Church placed 1,200 Israeli flags around the property, representing the 1,200 victims from the attack.
McLaughlin expressed the church’s commitment to supporting Israel, stating, “We feel it is biblical and deeply spiritual to be a church that supports Israel. We find it important to remember these individuals, and in their memory, we erected the flags.”
However, the display became a target of disrespect. Upon arriving Tuesday morning, McLaughlin discovered hundreds of flags had been uprooted and scattered. He described the act as one of cowardice, noting, “They pulled all of them up and stomped them into the ground. They came in the darkness of night. They’re cowards who did this.”
Despite the vandalism, the community showed resilience. Strangers, including individuals from a nearby veterinary clinic, volunteered to restore the display. McLaughlin appreciated their efforts, saying, “To my surprise, there were five strangers from our community working to restore the display.”
The neighborhood also rallied in support. Resident Russ Mortenson condemned the vandalism, stating, “It’s beyond belief. It’s hard for me to understand that. I found them to be very impressive and hopefully meaningful.”
McLaughlin reported that the church has also been receiving threats. They plan to bolster security while the display remains. Reflecting on the incident, McLaughlin said, “I wouldn’t want anybody to go to jail over it, but I certainly would like for them to face consequences because what they did was criminal.”
