Tua Tagovailoa returned to South Florida with the Atlanta Falcons, facing his former Miami Dolphins team. The reunion was far from joyful. For six seasons, the partnership between Tagovailoa and the Dolphins didn’t succeed.
The Dolphins made clear they Intended not to quit and start over, understanding this meant higher expectations for the team moving forward. In a preseason matchup against the Dolphins held on August 28, 2026, in Miami Gardens, Florida, Tagovailoa, alongside offensive lineman Ryan Neuzil, stepped onto the field. The event marked the first encounter since Tagovailoa’s split from Miami.
Tagovailoa faced challenges with coaches disliking his presence as injuries marred his progress. He never became the franchise’s face, falling short of the championship expectations set when drafted in 2020 and receiving top quarterback pay in 2024. This offseason separation left both parties believing they’d fare better apart.
Seeking a starting position with the Falcons, Tagovailoa’s aim is unfulfilled, as Michael Penix Jr., though limited in practice due to a 2025 knee injury, poses a challenge. Despite competition from an injured Penix, he hasn’t secured the starting role.
The Dolphins removed Tagovailoa, despite sacrifices including a $55 million salary hit in 2026, as part of a strategy to alleviate a salary cap issue caused by past management. Hiring Jeff Hafley as head coach and quarterback Malik Willis indicated Miami’s shift towards another rebuild.
Facing the Falcons, the Dolphins emerged without victory or talent promise. The sparse crowd at Hard Rock Stadium witnessed struggles from Tagovailoa, completing 7 out of 8 passes, and a Dolphins team full of backups.
Tagovailoa’s first drive resulted in a touchdown, highlighted by a 43-yard pass-and-run play involving Kyle Pitts. But a fumbled snap on the second drive handed Miami an easy recovery. The game closed with little to celebrate.
Disappointment marks both the Dolphins’ and Tagovailoa’s future with much to prove on the field. The journey continues, but success remains elusive.
