Tarik Skubal’s Journey from Detroit to Los Angeles

Tarik Skubal has become a prominent figure in Major League Baseball discussions. Skubal, who has spent his entire career with the Detroit Tigers, has emerged as one of the league’s top pitchers over the last four seasons. Despite his success, the Collective Bargaining Agreement has led to him receiving salaries below market value for his skills. With free agency on the horizon after this season, Skubal is set to finally capitalize on his achievements.

Detroit’s Dilemma

The Tigers experienced a challenging 2026 season despite their playoff appearance in 2025. They faced issues like injuries, poor bullpen performance, and underperformance. As they approached July with a record under .500, the Tigers had to decide Skubal’s fate. Their options were to retain him with the hope of a season turnaround or trade him to a contender for prospects and stability. Trading him would prevent losing him for just a draft pick in free agency.

Trade to the Dodgers

The Tigers traded Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, causing some controversy. The decision led to Skubal being perceived negatively by MLB fans. He aligned with other players, such as Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, in believing that the Dodgers’ approach of prioritizing winning over profits is acceptable.

There is a misconception that Skubal will spend the remainder of his career in Los Angeles. This misunderstanding overlooks how midseason trades work for potential free agents. However, Skubal expressed his desire to return to Detroit, indicating that he hopes the Tigers will re-engage in negotiations after the playoffs.

Skubal’s Emotional Departure

In an interview with Pardon My Take, Skubal shared his emotional experience of leaving the Tigers, a team he deeply values. He reflected on the friendships he built and the emotional goodbyes with teammates.

Skubal also expressed his optimism for the Tigers’ potential, despite the season’s outcome. The acquisitions of players like Framber Valdez and Kenley Jansen contributed to his belief that the team had World Series potential.

Potential Future with the Dodgers

The Dodgers might offer Skubal a contract extension. They have a brief exclusive window to negotiate with him post-World Series. However, for a player of Skubal’s caliber, testing the open market often proves more lucrative. Multiple teams, including the Mets and Giants, are likely to offer significant contracts.

The Dodgers have a history of trading for top talent without retaining them long-term. Examples include Yu Darvish, Manny Machado, and Max Scherzer. Skubal is aware that placing him in Los Angeles may only be temporary.

Tigers’ Current Performance

Despite trading Skubal, the Tigers are in the middle of a strong stretch, having won seven of their last ten games. They are close to the third American League wild-card spot and just behind in their division. The Tigers possess the best run differential in the AL and recently welcomed back prospect Jackson Jobe from injury.

Reports suggest if the Tigers make a playoff run, and manage to re-sign Skubal, perceptions of the Dodgers’ impact on baseball may remain unchanged.
