Texas Christian University (TCU) has changed course, restoring press credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The initial revocation took place days before TCU’s football season started. The Horned Frogs began their season in Dublin, Ireland, competing against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, coached by Bill Belichick. Due to the revocation, Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson covered the game from the stands.
The university initially withdrew the credentials after the Star-Telegram reported on a locker room incident that led to the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields. Fields was charged with aggravated assault following the altercation.
“Today, TCU Athletics fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram,” the athletic department announced. “In a series of productive discussions, we made clear our position and resolved to move forward. We respect their role as an independent news source and voice in our community, and we look forward to the season ahead.”
Ironically, TCU’s games are held at Amon G. Carter Stadium, named after the founder of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Despite the reinstatement of credentials, TCU lost their opener against UNC by a score of 15-10.
The team’s next game is scheduled for September 12, where they will host the Grambling State Tigers.
