Fatal Boating Collision in New Jersey
A late-night boating accident in Barnegat Bay resulted in the death of a 26-year-old passenger, critically injuring two others along the Jersey Shore in July. Kevin Wells, 40, faces felony charges, including vehicular homicide and assault by vessel while intoxicated. The incident occurred when Wells’ 32-foot Boston Whaler struck a channel marker in Toms River Township, prompting an emergency response.
Michael T. Bereheiko, a passenger, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Bereheiko, known affectionately as “Bear,” attended Watchung Hills Regional High School and was admired for his mechanical prowess. Wells was arrested and remains in custody pending a formal court hearing.
Other Boating Incidents
This summer has seen multiple boating collisions involving impairment. In one case, Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, faces charges for a Memorial Day crash after her vessel struck a channel marker, causing fatal injuries to her son. Authorities reported signs of intoxication during her arrest.
Another tragic incident involved Stephen Schneider, charged with reckless vessel homicide after a collision killed his two grandchildren. These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about boating safety and alcohol use on New Jersey waterways.
