Tensions Escalate as Russian Jets Intercept British Aircraft

On May 20, 2026, the British Defense Ministry reported a tense encounter involving two Russian jets intercepting a British surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea. The incident adds to the strained relations between Russia and the United Kingdom, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and espionage claims.

Defense Minister John Healey condemned the actions as threatening, citing the high risk of accidents and potential escalation. The encounter involved Russian Su-35 and Su-27 jets approaching the Royal Air Force (RAF) Rivet Joint aircraft. At one point, a Russian Su-27 flew within six meters (19 feet) of the British plane.

The Rivet Joint, on a routine international flight supporting NATO’s Eastern Flank security, became the target of multiple intercepts. Officials noted it as the most severe encounter with a U.K. Rivet Joint since 2022, when a Russian jet discharged a missile near a British aircraft.

The Russian jet’s proximity set off emergency protocols, temporarily disabling the plane’s autopilot. The ministry reported six aggressive passes made by another Su-27.

Healey reiterated that such provocations would not weaken the U.K.’s resolve to defend NATO and its interests against Russian hostilities. This incident followed an announcement of the Royal Navy tracking three Russian submarines near crucial Atlantic infrastructure.

The Defense Ministry highlighted the monitoring mission, including 500 personnel and over 450 flight hours. A naval frigate patrolled multiple thousand nautical miles, marking a vigilant defensive posture.

Relations between Russia and the U.K. remain tense, further strained by the incident. The British government, under successive prime ministers, has consistently supported Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The same week, U.K. defense and foreign ministry officials formally complained to the Russian embassy regarding the Black Sea interception.

In December 2025, the British navy monitored a Russian submarine through the English Channel. An agreement with Norway to jointly operate anti-submarine frigates in the North Atlantic was also signed that month.

Back in November 2025, Healey highlighted incidents involving Russian ships in U.K. waters gathering intelligence and mapping undersea cables. In November 2024, U.K. and NATO jets responded to Russian aircraft sightings near U.K. and Baltic airspace.
