French soccer star Kylian Mbappé found himself in a heated exchange with Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill after a World Cup match on Saturday. Playing at Philadelphia Stadium, Mbappé scored the decisive penalty in the 70th minute, leading France to a 1-0 win in the Round of 16.
As the French team celebrated, Mbappé engaged with the crowd. During this celebration, he inadvertently stepped in front of Gill, who was reaching out for a handshake. The situation escalated when Gill, feeling ignored, threw the ball at Mbappé.
Gill stated, “I tried to shake his hand, but since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper.” The match itself was physically challenging, with Paraguay executing a vigorous approach. Despite this, Gill was satisfied with his team’s performance.
Paraguay midfielder Andrés Cubas grabbed Mbappé in the offensive third, igniting a confrontation in the 35th minute. Further tensions arose when Matias Galarza collided with Mbappé off the ball in the first half. In the 77th minute, Juan José Cáceras kicked Mbappé’s right shin.
Remarkably, Paraguay did not receive any yellow cards for these infractions. France, conversely, had three yellow cards. Reflecting on the match, Mbappé said, “We knew what kind of match it was going to be. We can also get our hands dirty. We know how to do it. We know how to play ugly football. Guess they were thinking we were going to show up in tuxedos, but we were ready. Even at that kind of game, we were better than them.”
France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, criticized Paraguay’s rough tactics, stating, “They pull out every trick in the book. It’s not the kind of football that draws people to the stadium. Each team played the way they want. But there were insults from the other bench that I could do without.”
The intense nature of the match highlighted the competitive spirit and physical play that often characterize such high-stakes games.
