Texas GOP Senate Runoff: Trump Endorsement Boosts Paxton

In Plano, Texas, Republican voters are set to choose their nominee for the U.S. Senate in a runoff election. This marks the conclusion of a prolonged and costly primary campaign where President Donald Trump has intervened to influence the outcome. Trump’s late endorsement of State Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent four-term Senator John Cornyn represents his continued effort to align the GOP more closely with his ideals.

Trump’s backing of Paxton offers the challenger a significant boost, placing Cornyn at risk of becoming the first Republican senator in Texas to lose his bid for a party nomination. Despite Cornyn’s extensive campaign expenditure of around $90 million, largely aimed at discrediting Paxton, Trump’s influence remains potent among primary voters.

“Ken Paxton has gone through a lot, in many cases, very unfairly, but he is a Fighter, and knows how to win. Our Country needs Fighters, and also Loyalty to the Cause of Greatness.”

This June has seen Trump successfully supporting challengers in several states, including Louisiana, Kentucky, and Indiana. Paxton’s campaign, along with a supportive super PAC, capitalized on Trump’s endorsement, launching promotional ads shortly after the announcement. Though Cornyn recognized the impact of Trump’s support, he remains committed to his campaign, asserting that the decision ultimately lies with Texas voters.

The November election will see the nominated Republican facing Democratic state Representative James Talarico. Tuesday’s runoffs will also determine Democratic nominees for U.S. House seats in regions like Dallas and Houston, where the Democratic support is strong, and in the San Antonio area where the party aims to flip a seat.

Cornyn led the March primary but did not secure a majority, forced into a runoff with Paxton. Cornyn’s campaign concentrated on Paxton’s ethical issues and personal controversies, including an acquittal in a 2023 impeachment trial and a recent divorce filing.

Throughout, pro-Cornyn groups heavily outspent Paxton, yet have struggled with the negative perception fueled by Trump’s criticisms. Trump’s pattern of challenging Republicans not fully aligned with him persists, as seen recently in Louisiana and Kentucky. His criticism of Senator John Cornyn stems from perceived disloyalty, not full support during trying times, and past critical statements from Cornyn about Trump’s chances for re-election and policy stances.

Strategist Tyler Norris noted that Memorial Day timing might reduce voter turnout, potentially favoring Paxton, who benefits from solid support among Trump’s base. While Senate GOP leaders firmly stand behind Cornyn, some worry that nominating Paxton could drain resources needed in more competitive states.

Democrats Select House Nominees

Democratic races are also on in Texas, with Rep. Christian Menefee facing veteran Rep. Al Green in a redrawn 18th District. The primary realignment pits incumbents against each other. Menefee previously secured a seat in a special runoff after the passing of Rep. Sylvester Turner.

In the 33rd District, Colin Allred and Rep. Julie Johnson contest for the nomination. Near San Antonio, Democrats aim to keep Maureen Galindo, known for her antisemitic remarks, from winning over Johnny Garcia. Despite Republican redistricting efforts, the 35th District remains a Democratic target.
