The Texas Longhorns, ranked second in softball, secured their place at the Women’s College World Series. They achieved this with a decisive 5-0 victory against Arizona State in the Austin Super Regional on Sunday.
Despite the triumph, the game drew attention due to an explicit hot mic incident. ESPN microphones captured someone whispering inappropriate comments during the match after Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan gained an advantage over the opposing batter. Play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown, however, continued the broadcast seamlessly, without addressing the remarks.
The game included discussions about Arizona State manager Megan Bartlett’s success in nurturing assistant coaches. Kevin Brown noted, “You’re going to compete for national championships as an assistant, and then they’re going to send you off.”
Sunday’s event was part of a series of unexpected occurrences leading up to the tournament. Earlier, a celebration featuring former NBA star Jason Williams and his daughter, Mia, resulted in his ejection during Texas Tech’s game against Florida over the weekend. Mia Williams was instrumental in Texas Tech’s victory, hitting a two-run homer, against her former team last Friday.
Looking ahead, Texas will face the Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday in the Women’s College World Series’s double-elimination round.
