A man from Texas faced arrest after intentionally driving his Tesla Cybertruck into Grapevine Lake. He aimed to test the vehicle’s ‘Wade Mode’ feature. This attempt resulted in the truck becoming inoperable and taking on water.
Police were called to Katie’s Woods Park Boat Ramp after reports indicated a Cybertruck was partly underwater near the shoreline, according to the Grapevine Police Department.
Testing ‘Wade Mode’
The driver reportedly told the authorities that he drove the truck into the lake on purpose. He intended to activate the Cybertruck’s ‘Wade Mode.’ This feature is promoted by Tesla as temporarily increasing the truck’s height and pressurizing the battery to help handle shallow water and difficult terrain.
The situation took a wrong turn when the vehicle became disabled in the lake.
Rescue and Aftermath
Photos released by the police showed the stainless steel truck partially submerged while emergency teams worked to recover it. The driver and passengers managed to leave the vehicle safely. The Grapevine Fire Department Water Rescue Team assisted in removing the truck from the lake. Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred.
The driver, whose name remains undisclosed, was arrested at the scene. Charges included operating a vehicle in a restricted area and various water safety violations, as stated by the police.
“We want to remind drivers that although a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so can create legal and safety concerns under Texas law,” stated the Grapevine Police Department.
Repercussions and Warnings
Grapevine Lake is a well-known spot for recreation, popular for boating and fishing in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. While Tesla highlights the Cybertruck’s off-road abilities since its late 2023 launch, it cautions owners about the risks of water conditions that may surpass the vehicle’s limits.
Recently, some Cybertruck owners shared videos online showing the truck’s toughness in mud, sand, and water traversals. Tesla advises avoiding conditions beyond the truck’s capabilities despite their ‘Wade Mode’ designed for shallow crossings.
