Senate Republicans are allocating significant resources to maintain control over the Texas Senate seat as the midterm elections approach. The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC connected to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, is initiating the Texas PAC to bolster Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s campaign efforts against Democrat James Talarico.
Campaign Funding Surge
The PAC, starting with an eight-figure advertisement launch, plans to run ads until Election Day. The messages will focus on Paxton’s achievements and contrast with Talarico’s policies. Thune emphasized that Republicans aim to prevent Talarico from reaching the U.S. Senate, citing him as too progressive for Texas.
Strategic Support
Thune participated in a fundraising event for Paxton during the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas. Previously, Republican leaders supported Senator John Cornyn, but a shift occurred when Donald Trump endorsed Paxton over Cornyn. This led to a refocus on supporting Paxton’s bid to compete against Talarico.
Polls and Financial Dynamics
Recent polls place Talarico slightly ahead, with a Fox News survey showing a 51%-48% lead. Talarico’s campaign holds a financial advantage, raising over $72 million compared to Paxton’s $17 million. However, the increased support from the Texas PAC and MAGA Inc. aims to close this gap.
Paxton attributed the fundraising differential to a prolonged primary bout and noted that his recent advertisements highlight the ideological differences between his platforms and Talarico’s, which he believes will ultimately sway Texas voters.
