Paxton’s Allegations Against Talarico
Ken Paxton accuses James Talarico of corrupt practices during his tenure as a state representative. The charge intensifies the Texas Senate race as it nears the final phase.
“James Talarico abused his office to enrich himself and his employer,” Paxton asserted on X. He demands accountability for alleged corruption.
The allegations stem from Talarico’s past consulting role with MAYA Consulting, now VIDA Collaborative. This occurred during his involvement with the Texas House Public Education Committee.
The committee supervises the Texas Education Agency (TEA). During Talarico’s term, MAYA garnered substantial contracts from TEA.
A Republican National Committee spokesperson called it a “textbook pay-to-play scheme.” The Paxton campaign reinforced the claim, accusing Talarico of using public funds for personal gain.
Talarico’s team refuted the accusations, stating his compliance with legislative rules. They emphasized that he lacked influence over the firm’s contracts.
VIDA’s CEO asserted that Talarico’s work had no connection to contract awards. Financial disclosures confirmed his income from MAYA was publicly declared.
Paxton’s campaign underscored a possible conflict of interest. However, safeguards were reportedly in place to prevent such conflicts.
Paxton’s Own Controversial Record
Talarico’s camp counters with Paxton’s extensive ethical controversies. Paxton’s history includes impeachment allegations and a dropped fraud case.
“Ken Paxton is making up lies about James to distract from his impeachment and indictment for fraud,” claimed Talarico’s spokesperson.
Paxton faced securities fraud charges in 2015, resolved in 2024 with a restitution agreement. Moreover, his top staff raised corruption concerns in 2020, triggering an FBI probe.
Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House in May 2023 included multiple charges. Although acquitted by the Senate in September, these controversies fuel Talarico’s criticism.
An ad launched by the Talarico campaign describes Paxton as “the most corrupt politician in Texas,” highlighting ethical issues.
Current State of the Race
Talarico leads Paxton in major polls as the election approaches. The Democrat enjoys varying leads, though competition remains fierce.
The New York Times reports Paxton hasn’t led in polls since early August. Meanwhile, Talarico shows strong performance in districts previously won by President Trump.
Paxton remains skeptical of polling data, suggesting internal assessments indicate different outcomes.
The race continues to be closely monitored by political analysts and voters alike.
