Thailand Implements New Visa Restrictions for Tourists

Thailand is set to reduce the duration of visa-free stays for tourists from several countries, including the United States. This policy change was announced by the Thai government on Tuesday.

Citizens from 54 countries will now be limited to a 30-day stay without a visa, down from the previous 60 days. This adjustment impacts visitors from countries such as the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Singapore.

Since 2024, Thailand had relaxed entry requirements to draw more tourists following the pandemic. In 2025, approximately 33 million foreign tourists visited the country, a decline from nearly 40 million in 2019.

The Thai Embassy in Washington confirmed the change but withheld reasoning behind the decision. Reports from The Bangkok Post suggest concerns over foreigners starting businesses illegally and engaging in criminal activities.

The new visa policy will be implemented 15 days after its publication in The Royal Gazette, the Thai government’s official public journal. The exact date of publication remains uncertain.

Visitors currently in Thailand under existing visa rules will be allowed to stay until their permitted period expires.

Countries not included in the new 30-day policy will face varied regulations. For example, a 15-day visa exemption applies to three Indian Ocean island nations, while a visa on arrival is required for citizens of four countries, including India.

Travelers needing a visa can use Thailand’s online visa portal to apply.
