U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer of Maryland’s 5th District announced his retirement after 45 years of service in Congress. His departure opens up an opportunity for new leadership in the district. Voters have a diverse slate of candidates to consider, including a former staffer, a progressive attorney, and a former Capitol police officer.
Hoyer has been a significant figure in the Democratic Party, serving as the party’s No. 2 for two decades. As the community reflects on his leadership, the election will serve as an indicator of what Maryland Democrats envision for the future of their party.
Michelle Green, a registered nurse, chose Quincy Bareebe in the Democratic primary, expressing trust in Bareebe’s community engagement over Hoyer’s endorsed candidate, Adrian Boafo. Green’s vote highlighted a preference for candidates with personal rather than political endorsements.
Across Maryland, voters like Rodrick and Natasha Greensword showed support for candidates who align with the values of incumbent Governor Wes Moore. They endorsed Boafo for his shared values with Moore and Hoyer.
The race to succeed Hoyer has garnered significant attention, with voters keen to contribute to the decision-making process under rainy conditions at local voting sites such as Bowie High School.
