Anholt, Denmark — The saga of a stranded humpback whale that captivated Germany has concluded. After months of rescue attempts, the whale’s carcass was found and retrieved from shallow waters near Denmark.
Affectionately named ‘Timmy’ and ‘Hope,’ the whale became a public focus upon its first sighting off Germany’s coast on March 3. It was noted for repeated strandings in the Baltic Sea, an area not typical for its species.
German media widely covered updates on the whale’s condition. In a final rescue attempt on May 2, a barge transported the whale towards the North Sea, aiming for its natural habitat. Sadly, the whale was discovered deceased on May 14 near the island of Anholt, in the strait connecting the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a postmortem next week to uncover the cause of death. Speculation about why the whale entered the Baltic Sea suggests it may have been tracking herring or disoriented during migration.
News5, a Danish outlet, provided live coverage as the whale’s body was moved onto the beach with a truck-drawn cable, marking the end of an extensive and emotional rescue effort.
